Interesting day at the auction.
I wrote a little while back about Yumekoobo Today at the auction I go to it was very interesting to watch the deshi, apprentices, from Yumekoobo. The first thing was that one of them got a dress down from the other one about being a little late. Not a big thing but in the context of apprentices and Japan, a thing to notice. The second thing is that one of the administrators from the auction came over to talk to the two apprentices. Again, not something that stands out other than it really stands out in Japan. I have never seen anyone getting talked to. I wasn’t close enough to hear what was said but I will be watching to see if they come back next time. Unfortunately next time for me is October as August there is no auction and in September I have another thing scheduled. The last thing that was interesting was that one of the Yume guys bid on a set of bowls. He bid was tripled by a different dealer in one swoop. This was early in the morning. He didn’t bid anymore the rest of the day.
The things I got were somewhat strangely won. I didn’t really plan on getting most of them although I did want them. A lot of the items I really wanted I was outbid on. In a big way. There was a great, old, Noh mask and an even nicer wood cut, small statue.

A thought on dealer types.
I think there are three types of dealers. The first type only buys what they know. The second type only buys what looks nice. The third type doesn’t have an idea.
- 42 cm. charger
- Looking out at my yard. The roof is for my wood, my studio is just visible on the left, my son on the right in a hammock.
- Pair of shishi. I really want these but don’t have the money.
